"Grandpa, What Does The War In Iran Mean To Us?"

All my grandchildren have a stake in the answer to this question, so I will attempt it here. 

On February 28, 2026, the world as we know it changed forever. A coalition of U.S. and Israeli forces dropped a deluge of smart bombs targeted at the Islamic leadership. For forty-seven years their reign of terror in the Middle East had been allowed to perpetuate itself, virtually unopposed in pursuit of nuclear weapon technology aimed specifically at the United States and Israel. There were attempts at appeasement along the way, but their intent was to buy time and never to make peace. Instead, the annihilation of these superpowers was their ideology, and under the guise of “religion” they claimed Allah had sanctioned it. 

Well, the world has seen religious zealots before, but they never seem to resemble peacemakers. True religion, however, TRUE religion has at its core the pursuit of peace. As I write today, I am remembering all the recent addresses by General Authorities in the last six months that proclaimed peace, peacemakers and the gospel of Jesus Christ as the antidote for wars worldwide. 

Netanyahu and Trump

We live in the days of President Donald J. Trump, the POTUS who has been going about the business of stopping wars worldwide by the elimination of dictators, despots and hellions the world over since he took office for the second time in his life. 

He and Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel, perceived the threat from Iran was escalating. They took action without giving any advance warning, wiping out the internal leadership of 49 key Islamists who had been the core command structure. The intelligence gathering was fostered by internal sources that pinpointed their secret gathering place and time where the first bombs struck with unerring accuracy. 

From there the campaign expanded to include other strategic targets nationwide and continues today. Iran is home to some 90 million people, and this development was so stunning that residents took to the streets throughout the country. They would have sought safety in bomb shelters typically, but this time they were celebrating in the streets, once the news of what was happening spread quickly. They invested immediately their confidence in the overwhelming force that had been imposed against their hated dictators. 

This is indeed a striking development in the future not only of Iran, but in my judgment signals the opening of the major gathering of the lost tribes of Israel who will now be introduced in this new generation to the fullness of the gospel. There was a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that was forced to close after the overthrow of the Shah of Iran all those years ago. Our missionaries were withdrawn. 

Now in all likelihood that mission will reopen when hostilities settle and the freedom of the people is restored. They have been starved for the truth, and will welcome our missionaries and the message of the restored gospel, if it is allowed to proceed under a new Iranian government in the days ahead. I am impressed as I write these words today that we may very well see members of our family deployed there as part of that effort. 

Do I believe this hastens the day of the Second Coming? Well, certainly, we are a day closer, but I can tell you this much whenever I am asked this question (as recently as yesterday by my old partner Steve Harris): Keep your eye on Jerusalem and Jackson County, Missouri, as temples continue to be built worldwide. Those two centers of influence will one day have temples built prior to the Second Coming of the Savior. 

I saw a quote from President Gordon B. Hinckley that has been making rounds on social media this week that seems apropos: 

President Hinckley was a key player in the leadership of the Church for his entire life. He often showed up in the Parleys Sixth Ward, when I was in the bishopric and he was visiting his daughter Virginia and her husband Jim Pearce, and their children. He was Grandfather Lee’s traveling companion along with their wives, when they visited the Holy Land together. I considered him a dear friend, and he spoke at my mother’s funeral in 2000. I commend his counsel to each of you. 

There is no need to feel any anxiety among yourselves, my dearest posterity. I am undertaking my estate planning process these days, and I am proceeding as if life in Pine Valley will go on long after I am dead and buried beside my dear companion Patsy. 

Live your lives as though you are prepared to stand before your Savior in a coming day, sooner or later. That is how you prepare yourselves for the Second Coming. I believe all those people who once stood in my wedding reception line in 1969, have already had their own personal Second Coming, and in the due course of time so will I. 

Events on the earth will continue to unfold in sometimes shocking and eventual developments that may appear to be jarring and unsettling on their surface, but take heart - these are mere preparatory steps in the gradual unfolding of the promised day when the Savior will return trailing clouds of glory. 

Second Coming of Jesus Christ

I will continue to prepare by living my covenants I have made in the temple. Those covenants are capped with my sacred sealing covenants with Patsy. I know she lives on in the spirit world, and is there waiting to greet me with open arms once again. That reality guides me and prompts me in all that I am doing today to prepare myself for her company. I know she will be anxious to give me the guided tour when we are reunited. 

The Winds of Change

We live in a world of ever-changing circumstances. Temperatures fall, then they rise again. One day the sun is shining brightly, the next day brings snow and blizzards. 

I have observed over a lifetime that includes 78 trips around the sun that people change too. Some are rock solid and steadfast in their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, come what may to discourage or dissuade them. Some are prone to being tossed about with every wind of doctrine that blows this way or that. 

In Ephesians 4:14-15, the Apostle Paul pleads:

That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints today, we are patiently waiting for the next change in our leadership to occur. President Russell M. Nelson died recently on September 27, 2025, at the age of 101 years young. That's the definition of "venerable" if there ever was one.

His death has given rise to a host of those inside and outside the Church who are prone and more than willing to offer their "sagacious" range of opinions on what should be done. (I use the quotes intentionally). So many want to rise up and be heard on what should or should not happen. I find this tumult of opinion on the one hand almost comical, and on the other hand disheartening that so many would presume so much. They are speculators and prognosticators, but they are NOT prophets.

This is The Church of Jesus Christ I belong to, and it is not a church of men. It is governed by the Savior Himself. He has raised up living Apostles in the Restoration of His Church that began with the formal organization of the Church on April 6, 1830, preceded by the translation and publication of The Book of Mormon. Because He alone stands at the head of this Church, it is my belief that He who knows the beginning to the end holds the timetable. He does not make mistakes if we believe He is the perfect Son of God, and that is what I believe.

I was the oldest grandson of President Harold B. Lee. He was the 11th President of the Church. He was called on April 10, 1941, as the junior Apostle. Over time he rose in seniority in the Twelve until he became the senior Apostle and presided over the Church. He was an eyewitness to many transitions in leadership in the Church, and he taught us all about it in a family home evening he convened in his home. He outlined for us step by step and day by day what would happen during the "Apostolic Interregnum" like the one we are currently in. That is the period of time that elapses between the death of the Prophet, and the succession of the next one. That period will soon come to a close and the orderly transition to the new Church administration will begin shortly, perhaps as early as this next week.

I testify on these poor pages that there is nothing to speculate about here. We are in the hands of the Lord and His living Apostles. And because that is true, I can certify we are in good hands. Changing winds are indeed blowing, as I learned overnight last night. One picture is showing resplendent fall leaves against a backdrop of blue skies shrouded in luminous while clouds, and the other is the sight that greeted me this morning when I awakened. Those weather changes where I live are to be expected and welcomed, not dreaded and feared.

Changes continue to occur not only in the Church today, but in the world at large. For instance, who would have predicted even a month ago that President Donald J. Trump, brokering for a peace settlement in the Middle East, would have been able to announce that an agreement between all the disparate parties had been achieved? That's a BIG CHANGE on the world stage that has seen nothing but war in that part of the world for generations. I am praying in earnest that the settlement of hostilities will become permanent and stable as conditions on the ground play out going forward. PEACEMAKERS must be applauded and sustained in my humble opinion.

I no longer have much fear left in me. I have lived through a host of changes in my life. My testimony in the Savior Jesus Christ is what anchors me today. I have become the grandfather and the great-grandfather of an astounding posterity of warriors for Christ and His Church. They have enlisted in the cause of truth that will continue to spread across this planet. The Quorum of the Twelve Apostles will continue to be our prophetic guides in that uncertain future up ahead.

And yes, they are aged, sagacious and well-suited for the tasks ahead. I will assist them in whatever capacity I can.

Making Peace in a War-Torn World

 Because we live in the United States of America, we can be forgiven if we do not fully appreciate the agony of those who are living in war-torn countries around the world. I will not undertake a complete listing of those countries, but suffice it to say there are many right now.

Perhaps top of the list might be the 3½ year-old conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The principal leaders are Putin and Zelenskyy, neither of which has shown a willingness to consider peace. In the meantime, lives have been lost on the battlefield.

The Russia-Ukraine war began in February 2022 when Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, escalating a conflict that had been simmering since Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014. Initially, Russia aimed for a swift takeover, but Ukrainian resistance, supported by Western military aid, halted major advances. Over time, the war has evolved into a prolonged and grinding conflict, with both sides suffering heavy casualties. Russia has captured some territory in eastern Ukraine, while Ukraine has conducted counteroffensives with mixed results. Diplomatic efforts have stalled, and recent reports indicate that the U.S. and Russia have discussed potential resolutions to the war without Ukraine’s direct involvement. Meanwhile, military aid and financial support from Western allies, particularly the U.S., continued to play a crucial role in sustaining Ukraine’s war effort.

And then Trump said, “Enough,” and foreign aid from the U.S. ceased. Europe has stepped up to some degree to assist in opposition to Russia’s naked aggression, but now Putin and Trump have concluded a private meeting in Alaska on Friday, to be followed by a meeting tomorrow in Washington between European leaders and Trump. The rhetoric is extreme, and truthfully none of us can decipher what is really happening. Trump is positioning himself solely as the mediator, because as he said, “This isn’t my war.”

The loss of over a million lives needlessly is what is most troubling in my heart and mind. All of this high-stakes drama on the world stage is causing uncertainty and a high degree of speculation, depending upon where one turns for news.

We have almost become numb, I believe, to the rumors of wars and the actual wars. It has become a commonplace piece of our existence. The closest I ever came to war was the Vietnam War during my era as a young man. In those days I read D&C 87:2:

And the time will come that war will be poured out upon all nations, beginning at this place. (Kirtland, Ohio).

That was not comforting news to me as a young man who had hoped to establish a temple marriage and a family. It disrupted my plans. I was not assured of anything, but my faith in the Lord Jesus Christ sustained me through that period of doubt, as it will for all of you.

Now a new generation faces similar challenges. Will Donald Trump be successful in mediating between the warring factions yet again? The pundits and the talking heads on all the media platforms continue their diatribes in full force. I frankly cannot tune in for all the commentary. I am reveling instead in the knowledge of my faithful posterity, many of whom are enlisting in the service of the Lord as missionaries in their far-flung assignments.

The latest to join the ranks is Jonny, who received his endowment yesterday in the Payson Temple. I was told he selected that temple because it was the first temple open house he attended and he said he would one day return to engage in temple work himself when he was older. And so he did!

The world may be in turmoil all around us, it is true, but in the House of the Lord there is peace and solemnity of soul.

I pray for all the peacemakers in the world, including Donald J. Trump. He seems to be transcending politics as usual. I pray others may follow his example in seeking peaceful resolutions to their conflicts. I say all of this knowing full well that the world will continue to pursue war on a widespread scale as prophesied. Nevertheless, we can CHOOSE peaceful resolutions whenever we can.

While I waited briefly for the session to begin yesterday, my pages in the Book of Mormon landed on these verses:

And now it came to pass in this year, yea, in the two hundred and thirty and first year, there was a great division among the people.

And it came to pass that in this year there arose a people who were called the Nephites, and they were true believers in Christ; and among them there were those who were called by the Lamanites—Jacobites, and Josephites, and Zoramites;

Therefore the true believers in Christ, and the true worshipers of Christ, (among whom were the three disciples of Jesus who should tarry) were called Nephites, and Jacobites, and Josephites, and Zoramites.

And it came to pass that they who rejected the gospel were called Lamanites, and Lemuelites, and Ishmaelites; and they did not dwindle in unbelief, but they did wilfully rebel against the gospel of Christ; and they did teach their children that they should not believe, even as their fathers, from the beginning, did dwindle.

And it was because of the wickedness and abomination of their fathers, even as it was in the beginning. And they were taught to hate the children of God, even as the Lamanites were taught to hate the children of Nephi from the beginning.

And it came to pass that two hundred and forty and four years had passed away, and thus were the affairs of the people. And the more wicked part of the people did wax strong, and became exceedingly more numerous than were the people of God.

And they did still continue to build up churches unto themselves, and adorn them with all manner of precious things. And thus did two hundred and fifty years pass away, and also two hundred and sixty years.

And it came to pass that the wicked part of the people began again to build up the secret oaths and combinations of Gadianton.

And also the people who were called the people of Nephi began to be proud in their hearts, because of their exceeding riches, and become vain like unto their brethren, the Lamanites.

And from this time the disciples began to sorrow for the sins of the world.

And it came to pass that when three hundred years had passed away, both the people of Nephi and the Lamanites had become exceedingly wicked one like unto another.

And it came to pass that the robbers of Gadianton did spread over all the face of the land; and there were none that were righteous save it were the disciples of Jesus. And gold and silver did they lay up in store in abundance, and did traffic in all manner of traffic. (4 Nephi 1:35-46, emphasis mine).

Many churches, many “ites” - most stunning was that they TAUGHT THEIR CHILDREN WICKEDNESS AND HATRED. The story of the people in those days is a cautionary tale for our day. The book was written, compiled and translated to come forth in this last dispensation of the fulness of times.

Contrast that with what you are all trying to do, and that is to teach your children righteousness instead. You are disciples of Jesus, and you are in the minority, always have been, always will be. I give you my assurances that you are in the right path. Your children will one day rise up and call you blessed because of what you have taught them in your homes.

This is the generation who will prepare the way for the Savior’s Second Coming, even as we witness more wickedness than we have ever seen before. I love you all for your steadfastness.

Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ vs. Fear of the World and Its Minions

I wrote the following entry to my family on Monday morning of this week. I include it here for your consideration as my wider audience:

President Donald J. Trump ordered a bombing run on the nuclear development facilities in Iran this last weekend. The strike was targeted solely with the purpose of eliminating the threat of Iran developing a nuclear weapon, which for years it has threatened to use against Israel.

The repercussions have been deemed a great military victory that achieved its objectives beyond doubt. But detractors have been condemning the action as an act of war that is unconstitutional because the consent of the Senate and the House was not sought nor obtained before the stunning action was taken by the President.

The political debate rages on about our involvement as a fully invested partner of Israel. Are we at WAR with Iran? How could we not be? Will this be the escalation to World War III? How will this play out in the weeks and months ahead? Will Iran retaliate or capitulate? Will the Iranian regime governed by their religious clerics prevail, or will they be overthrown by the voice of the majority of the citizens who have been compelled to live under a de facto dictatorship? What will this mean for the future of the political landscape of the Middle East? Does this action by the United States signal the beginning of the end before the Second Coming of the Savior?

These are just a sampling of the questions I have heard over the weekend and into this morning as I write this chapter. Clearly at the forefront to all the speculation about what it all means for me is the abiding question: Do I believe in the future as outlined by the Savior and His prophets, or am I inclined to be tossed about with every wind of doctrine that blows in my face, no matter the source?

It comes down to a simple question for me: Am I filled with FAITH in the Savior Jesus Christ, or filled with those who would promote FEAR?

Elder Kevin W. Pearson, Utah Area President and a frequent visitor to our little Woodland Ward (he owns a summer home nearby), has offered this observation back in 2009:

“Faith and fear cannot coexist. One gives way to the other. The simple fact is we all need to constantly build faith and overcome sources of destructive disbelief. The Savior’s teaching comparing faith to a grain of mustard seed recognizes this reality (see Matthew 13:31–32). Consider it this way: our net usable faith is what we have left to exercise after we subtract our sources of doubt and disbelief. You might ask yourself this question: ‘Is my own net faith positive or negative?’ If your faith exceeds your doubt and disbelief, the answer is likely positive. If you allow doubt and disbelief to control you, the answer might be negative.

“We do have a choice. We get what we focus on consistently. Because there is an opposition in all things, there are forces that erode our faith. Some are the result of Satan’s direct influence. But for others, we have no one but ourselves to blame. These stem from personal tendencies, attitudes, and habits we can learn to change…

“Challenging times require greater spiritual power. Consider carefully the Savior’s promise: ‘If ye will have faith in me ye shall have power to do whatsoever thing is expedient in me’ (Moroni 7:33).

“I humbly declare that God, our Heavenly Father, lives and loves each of us, His children. Jesus Christ is our Savior and Redeemer. He lives and personally leads His Church through President Monson, His anointed prophet. Because He lives, there is always hope smiling brightly before us. In a household of faith, there is no need to fear or doubt. Choose to live by faith and not fear.” (Emphasis mine).

Let me add my witness. We will see the ongoing development of a complete separation between the righteous and the wicked parts of human family in the years ahead. We will be compelled by the events ahead in the world to choose our own path. There will be no coercion whatsoever that would violate our agency. We will respond to the impressions of the spirit of the Holy Ghost freely and without compulsion of any kind. Fence straddling will no longer be possible. The gap will simply become too wide.

I coincidentally was teaching the Elders Quorum lesson yesterday. We touched briefly on the events of Saturday, but that was not the main focus of the lesson. We were reviewing the General Conference talk of Sister Tamara W. Runia about our need for daily repentance. I commend her thoughts to all of us.

As we turn our thoughts to our Savior and accept that He is our Redeemer in all things temporal and spiritual, we are inclined to put our trust in Him and reject all the machinations of those who would discount His role in our lives.

I made a tangential reference to my compilation of all the scriptures that mentioned the word “ZION” back in 2008. I had worked on it many years prior to that. I had three brethren in the meeting yesterday ask me for a copy of the pdf file that resulted after I had completed the manuscript. I thought, well, there’s nothing like a few bunker busting bombs falling in Iran to stir up the soul to action, I guess.

That’s all well and good, you might say, but what about the REALITIES of war that are now more prevalent than they might have been before the events of the weekend? Are we to accept the military superiority of the United States of America as the arm of strength that will produce peace, or should we be taking defensive steps like building up our food storage, etc.?

“For I am no respecter of persons, and will that all men shall know that the day speedily cometh; the hour is not yet, but is nigh at hand, when peace shall be taken from the earth, and the devil shall have power over his own dominion.” (D&C 1:35).

Let me add my perspective as an old (and hopefully wiser) man. I have seen these geopolitical upheavals and worldwide events play out before during my lifetime. At the time they seemed catastrophic, and as subsequent years unfold we see them as mere steppingstones all leading to the culmination foreseen and foretold by the prophets who left their witnesses for us in the compiled scriptures.

As you fill your hearts and minds with the written words of scripture, you will be assured time and again of the majesty of the impeccable foreknowledge of our Father in Heaven. He has the times and the seasons of our mortal lives in His hands. He has given assurances through all the ages that we are His children, and our ultimate destiny is in His hands. We are free to choose to be fearful about all that, or we can accept the peace and the comfort He offers through His prophets.

The choice is clearly ours to make:

FAITH IN THE LORD JESUS CHRIST

OR FEAR IN THE WAYS OF MAN

I am confident in your ability to choose the better part, for I have seen you grow and develop spiritually. I know you have been held in reserve to come forward in these troubled last days as the chosen generation of our Father in Heaven’s children.

I encourage you to set aside the tendency to fear that which you do not fully understand. Embrace the path of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Stay on the covenant path and encourage others to join you there.

That is the way of truth and light.

The “ink” on this post wasn’t even dry before President Trump announced that a ceasefire agreement had been reached between Iran and Israel to end this twelve-day war.

Now it remains to be proven that both countries will abide by the terms they have hammered out together. These events are being played out so quickly and decisively that it takes one’s breath away.

Beware of all the predictions being made by the political pundits. Events on the ground in the Middle East have forever befuddled all the false prophets.

I pray peace may break out, and be lasting.

Animosity and Angst Among Us All

Yesterday, I attended an endowment session in the Bountiful Utah Temple. I arrived early and perused the scriptures before the session started. I was drawn to the topic "Wars and Rumors of Wars." I turned the pages in the Standard Works for references to the topic, which I will share later in this post.

Then today, I was at lunch in Park City. I was alone, but seated only a few feet away from two couples. The men were engaged in a spirited conversation about the MLB Hall of Fame and who should be in it and who should be excluded. One was wearing a Seattle Supersonics sweatshirt. He was vociferously arguing with his counterpart about Ken Griffey, Jr., who had played for the Mariners, giving all his reasons why that player should be named to the HOF. The other was arguing against his inclusion.

I listened casually to the debate, and the thought kept running through my mind, "But isn't he already in the HOF?" I consulted my iPhone for the answer. Sure enough, Griffey was inducted in the class of 2016.

Finally, unable to constrain myself any longer, I sidled over to their table, and cordially introduced myself as a lifelong Yankees fan who couldn't help overhearing their spirited debate. I told them I could put an end to their questions if they were willing, and I said it with a smile on my face. "Would they be willing to entertain SIRI as their final answer?" I wondered. They both sheepishly grinned and said they would.

Taking out my phone, I queried, "Siri, is Ken Griffey, Jr., in the Hall of Fame?" She immediately returned the response I had seen earlier for all at their table to hear together. They all fell into a stunned silence, and I resumed my lunch in peace at last. Their "debate" turned into whispers thereafter and the tensions subsided immediately. I felt rewarded as the arbiter in that exchange.

Now think about similar skirmishes you may have witnessed in your life. Have you, too, been witness to serious and seemingly endless debates and arguments with little or no merit over what were likely meaningless topics? I'm certain you have. What have you done about it?

The world at large is a plentiful playground for regional conflicts. I'm thinking about what has been going on in Ukraine and Russia in recent years. Then you look at Israel and Hamas and the escalation of hostilities in that part of the world. There are other insoluble wars too that could be added to the list. Tensions in the Middle East never seem to subside. The field is fertile for peacemakers if they can be found.

In the middle of these warring parties, peacemakers have been hard to come by, it seems. President Donald Trump has attempted to negotiate between the parties in several conflicts, and has been rebuffed. I credit him for trying to bring the factions together, but his efforts have thus far yielded little fruit. When a country goes to war, when tensions turn violent, and when the parties involved maintain their intransigence, it seems no amenable outcome is possible. We are witnessing much bloodshed and loss of life as a result.

I believe the greatest challenge our world faces today is the animosity and the angst we see among warring nations. There have always been wars and rumors of war since the beginning. Indeed, that reality is a well-documented feature of the prophecies associated with the last days. Here's a sampling for your consideration:

For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.

And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.

All these are the beginning of sorrows. (Matthew 24:5-8, emphasis mine).

Ye say that ye know that the end of the world cometh; ye say also that ye know that the heavens and the earth shall pass away;

And in this ye say truly, for so it is; but these things which I have told you shall not pass away until all shall be fulfilled.

And this I have told you concerning Jerusalem; and when that day shall come, shall a remnant be scattered among all nations;

But they shall be gathered again; but they shall remain until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.

And in that day shall be heard of wars and rumors of wars, and the whole earth shall be in commotion, and men’s hearts shall fail them, and they shall say that Christ delayeth his coming until the end of the earth.

And the love of men shall wax cold, and iniquity shall abound. (D&C 45:22-27, emphasis mine).

And now I show unto you a parable. Behold, wheresoever the carcass is, there will the eagles be gathered together; so likewise shall mine elect be gathered from the four quarters of the earth.

And they shall hear of wars, and rumors of wars.

Behold I speak for mine elect’s sake; for nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.

And again, because iniquity shall abound, the love of men shall wax cold; but he that shall not be overcome, the same shall be saved.

And again, this Gospel of the Kingdom shall be preached in all the world, for a witness unto all nations, and then shall the end come, or the destruction of the wicked; (Joseph Smith-Matthew 1:27-31, emphasis mine).

Wherefore, it hath been told them concerning the destruction which should come upon them, immediately after my father left Jerusalem; nevertheless, they hardened their hearts; and according to my prophecy they have been destroyed, save it be those which are carried away captive into Babylon.

And now this I speak because of the spirit which is in me. And notwithstanding they have been carried away they shall return again, and possess the land of Jerusalem; wherefore, they shall be restored again to the land of their inheritance.

But, behold, they shall have wars, and rumors of wars; and when the day cometh that the Only Begotten of the Father, yea, even the Father of heaven and of earth, shall manifest himself unto them in the flesh, behold, they will reject him, because of their iniquities, and the hardness of their hearts, and the stiffness of their necks.

Behold, they will crucify him; and after he is laid in a sepulchre for the space of three days he shall rise from the dead, with healing in his wings; and all those who shall believe on his name shall be saved in the kingdom of God. Wherefore, the Jews shall be scattered among all nations; yea, and also Babylon shall be destroyed; wherefore, the Jews shall be scattered by other nations.

And after they have been scattered, and the Lord God hath scourged them by other nations for the space of many generations, yea, even down from generation to generation until they shall be persuaded to believe in Christ, the Son of God, and the atonement, which is infinite for all mankind — and when that day shall come that they shall believe in Christ, and worship the Father in his name, with pure hearts and clean hands, and look not forward any more for another Messiah, then, at that time, the day will come that it must needs be expedient that they should believe these things.

And the Lord will set his hand again the second time to restore his people from their lost and fallen state. Wherefore, he will proceed to do a marvelous work and a wonder among the children of men.

Wherefore, he shall bring forth his words unto them, which words shall judge them at the last day, for they shall be given them for the purpose of convincing them of the true Messiah, who was rejected by them; and unto the convincing of them that they need not look forward any more for a Messiah to come, for there should not any come, save it should be a false Messiah which should deceive the people; for there is save one Messiah spoken of by the prophets, and that Messiah is he who should be rejected of the Jews.

For according to the words of the prophets, the Messiah cometh in six hundred years from the time that my father left Jerusalem; and according to the words of the prophets, and also the word of the angel of God, his name shall be Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

And now, my brethren, I have spoken plainly that ye cannot err. And as the Lord God liveth that brought Israel up out of the land of Egypt, and gave unto Moses power that he should heal the nations after they had been bitten by the poisonous serpents, if they would cast their eyes unto the serpent which he did raise up before them, and also gave him power that he should smite the rock and the water should come forth; yea, behold I say unto you, that as these things are true, and as the Lord God liveth, there is none other name given under heaven save it be this Jesus Christ, of which I have spoken, whereby man can be saved. (2 Nephi 25:10-20, emphasis mine).

There have been centuries before where the scattering of Israel, including the tribe of Judah, has occurred, and all the prophets have spoken of a day of the gathering of Israel in the last days with signs accompanying that gathering. We are living witnesses of the acceleration of that gathering now happening all over the earth under the direction of living prophets.

I offer my solemn witness that the wars and rumors of wars, indeed the animosity and the angst among nations and individuals is the preamble to the happy days ahead of us as the gathering of Israel unfolds in the most natural and gratifying result we can imagine. Against the backdrop of chaos swirling around us worldwide, the signs of the Second Coming of the Savior Jesus Christ are unfolding clearly for those with eyes to see and hearts aligned to the scriptures like the ones I've cited herein.

The dedications of temples worldwide are a striking fulfillment of the gathering of Israel, like the picture shown above at the dedication of the Rome Italy Temple where all fifteen of the living prophets attended.

Next time you are party to the tabletop debates like the one I saw today, regardless of how trivial the topic may be, please consider what you can do to be a peacemaker. Then applaud and encourage others to do the same within the sphere of your influence.

May we all find peace and enjoy the spirit of the Holy Ghost as a result, I pray.

Be a Maker of Peace

As this Christmas season commences, I have a suggestion. Let's all make a concerted effort to make peace in our world this year. It all starts with each of us as individuals. But you may ask what can one person do to make a difference in such a noisy contentious world? My answer is that you can do more than you imagine.

This year, as in every year, there is chaos everywhere. We end each year, it seems, determined to do better in the coming year. That's what New Year's resolutions are designed to help us focus on. We get to breathe a huge sigh of relief as we recount what happened to us in the year. We pause, we slow down and reflect, and we are often overwhelmed with sorrow and grief over the tragedies that have hit us. Often these setbacks have come upon us uninvited and certainly unwelcomed. And yet, come they do and there seems to be little we can do to stop them.

It's the stuff of which this mortal probation is all about. If life were predictable and everything always worked out exactly the way we drew it up in our planning, there would be no testing, no opposition and no stretching to help us progress to a higher and holier place. Indeed, we would be following blindly like robots programmed for perfection without having paid a price for any of it ourselves. And whose idea was that in the beginning? Oh wait, I remember now:

And the Lord said: Whom shall I send? And one answered like unto the Son of Man: Here am I, send me. And another answered and said: Here am I, send me. And the Lord said: I will send the first.

And the second was angry, and kept not his first estate; and, at that day, many followed after him. (Abraham 3:27-28).

And I, the Lord God, spake unto Moses, saying: That Satan, whom thou hast commanded in the name of mine Only Begotten, is the same which was from the beginning, and he came before me, saying — Behold, here am I, send me, I will be thy son, and I will redeem all mankind, that one soul shall not be lost, and surely I will do it; wherefore give me thine honor. 

But, behold, my Beloved Son, which was my Beloved and Chosen from the beginning, said unto me — thy will be done, and the glory be thine forever. 

Wherefore, because that Satan rebelled against me, and sought to destroy the agency of man, which I, the Lord God, had given him, and also, that I should give unto him mine own power; by the power of mine Only Begotten, I caused that he should be cast down; 

And he became Satan, yea, even the devil, the father of all lies, to deceive and to blind men, and to lead them captive at his will, even as many as would not hearken unto my voice. 

And now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which I, the Lord God, had made. 

And Satan put it into the heart of the serpent, (for he had drawn away many after him,) and he sought also to beguile Eve, for he knew not the mind of God, wherefore he sought to destroy the world. (Moses 4:1-6). 

In today's world, we are witnessing the adherents to Satan at war with one another. Some in the Church are still fond of citing the "two plans" that were posited in the beginning. But, there were never two plans, only one plan - the Father's plan. At issue was who would implement THAT ONE PLAN. 

The Father's great plan of happiness included the agency of man "which I, the Lord God, had given him, that I should give unto him mine own power; by the power of mine Only Begotten." 

In opposition to the Father's plan Satan offered to redeem everyone and to have the Father give him all the honor and glory. Because of his rebellion, he was cast down, deprived of the privilege of a mortal body. 

Satan must have been very persuasive, however, because we learn "at that day many followed after him." When we think about all those - dare we call them "evil spirits?" - who followed Satan in the pre-existence, then we do the math on it, let's look at Neal A. Maxwell's analysis: 

64,000,000,000 who have lived in physical bodies on Earth to 1976 

~ 70,000,000,000 to 1984 (Maxwell's estimate) or 2/3 of all the spirits 

35,000,000,000 or 1/3 of all the hosts of heaven who followed Satan 

The current world population is 8,076,994,357 as of Wednesday, December 6, 2023 according to the most recent United Nations estimates elaborated by Worldometer. 

Now think about this: For every one of us Satan has about four of his minions he could assign to us to help him in his avowed mission to "destroy the world." Seems a little overwhelming doesn't it? Here's the good news: God has called only one prophet at a time to send His redeeming love into the world to bless all His children, and that man, that one man, is President Russell M. Nelson. That one man has been a consistent champion and witness to the divinity of the Savior Jesus Christ, who was chosen by the Father to implement that ONE PLAN of redeeming grace.

When he dies (he's in his 100th year today!), as surely he will, God will raise up another prophet in his stead to carry forward the work of gathering Israel in these last days until the Savior comes again to rule and reign on Earth. Here's what the prophet has said about peacemakers: 

"At this point you may be thinking that this message [to become peacemakers] would really help someone you know. Perhaps you are hoping that it will help him or her to be nicer to you. I hope it will! But I also hope that you will look deeply into your heart to see if there are shards of pride or jealousy that prevent you from becoming a peacemaker. 

"If you are serious about helping to gather Israel and about building relationships that will last throughout the eternities, now is the time to lay aside bitterness. Now is the time to cease insisting that it is your way or no way. Now is the time to stop doing things that make others walk on eggshells for fear of upsetting you. Now is the time to bury your weapons of war. If your verbal arsenal is filled with insults and accusations, now is the time to put them away. You will arise as a spiritually strong man or woman of Christ. 

"The temple can help us in our quest. There we are endowed with God’s power, giving us the ability to overcome Satan, the instigator of all contention. Cast him out of your relationships! Note that we also rebuke the adversary every time we heal a misunderstanding or refuse to take offense. Instead, we can show the tender mercy that is characteristic of true disciples of Jesus Christ. Peacemakers thwart the adversary. 

"Let us as a people become a true light on the hill — a light that 'cannot be hid.' Let us show that there is a peaceful, respectful way to resolve complex issues and an enlightened way to work out disagreements. As you demonstrate the charity that true followers of Jesus Christ manifest, the Lord will magnify your efforts beyond your loftiest imagination.

"The gospel net is the largest net in the world. God has invited all to come unto Him, 'black and white, bond and free, male and female.' There is room for everyone. However, there is no room for prejudice, condemnation, or contention of any kind. 

"My dear brothers and sisters, the best is yet to come for those who spend their lives building up others. Today I invite you to examine your discipleship within the context of the way you treat others. 

"I bless you to make any adjustments that may be needed so that your behavior is ennobling, respectful, and representative of a true follower of Jesus Christ.

I had the perfect example of a peacemaker in my own home. Patsy was always a peacemaker who shunned even the slightest hint of contention. She lifted others, blessed them with her grace and her love. She served them constantly, tirelessly and championed them in their adversities. She even worried about them, but even in that one weakness she ultimately overcame her worry with faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. She took her worries to Him in everything, and in time - His time - solutions presented themselves to which she immediately subscribed and put into action. 

We are often talked out of our good intentions by the four evil spirits working on our faith. We too often are convinced that we are just one person, and what can only one weak individual like us do to bring about improvements in a wicked world? 

When you are tempted with those faulty thoughts, think about what one prophet, one mother, one father, one son or daughter, one bishop, one Relief Society President, one ministering saint can do, and then be assured that you are not just one. As our son, Steve, reminded us at Patsy's funeral, "When we show up our gifts show up too." What a priceless insight that is for each of us. You just have to "show up." 

But you might counter, "I don't have any gifts compared to everyone else around me." Again, that thought is worse than faulty. It is Satanic. Your gifts are many and they are powerful, more efficacious in someone else's life than you will ever know. 

When I think about Patsy's gifts and how they have been multiplied many times over into a posterity that now numbers over ninety precious souls in mortal tabernacles who are faithful and serving the best they know how, I have come to believe that none of us should ever discount our capability for good in such dismissive terms as, "I'm just not good enough." Or, "What difference can I make?" Or, "I am only one person." Stop it, already! 

You can be that peacemaker in your marriage, in your ward, in your stake, in your calling in the Church wherever it may take you, and don't be surprised when you get to the spirit world to be surrounded by your kindred spirits for whom you did all those vicarious ordinances in the temples. You are blessing legions whom you have never met in this life!! 

Only you, only one person, only someone as insignificant and weak as you. 

Only someone who learned how to make peace.
